What does it mean when he says "Te quiero"?

I've been dating this guy for four months now, he's not my boyfriend for a lot of reasons but we get along really well. Last night, he texted me "Babe, te quiero mucho." I speak spanish well, but it's different when you're translating words into actual emotions. What exactly did he mean by that? I know it's not "I love you," though a lot of people use it like that. Does it just mean I like you? Does it mean a little more than I like you?
