Explain the ideas of what breeds obedience?

Breeds? I don't like that word too much. How about what causes someone to obey? Well let's see... my dog listens because I give it treats. My husband listens because he doesn't want me to be mad at him. My kids listen because they're scared of being punished. I listen out of respect. Those are my examples.
